Lord Chancellor Irvine said many times, that if people were concerned about the conduct
of a judge (not his decision) they should send a complaint to him (the Ld. Ch.). The complaint would be sent to the judge for his comments, & if the Lord Chancellor
thought it necessary, he may offer ‘advice’ to the judge.
Sometime in 2001 I sent dossiers about Judge Grenfell to ‘Judicial Appointments Group
V’, of the Lord Chancellor’s Dept. (now the Dept of Constitutional affairs).
Having been separated from my own copies years ago, but having recently been given the new Tel. No. (020 7217 4847)
I spoke to Mr. H. Hochfelder (now Judicial Correspondence
Group).
I was surprised
at the efficiency & helpfulness when it only took him seconds to give me the dates of the 2 letters & one dossier
(12/6/01, 26-27/09/01 & 1/10/01). He immediately agreed to my request that he send copies to me.
I asked if the dossier had been sent to Judge Bentley for his comments, & was told ‘no’,
it had only been put ‘on file’. I expressed surprise, & was told
that only complaints about the judge’s conduct outside court were sent to him, which surprised
me even more. On reflection, it should not have surprised me.
After following me from one prison to another, the dossier dated 26/9/2001 did arrive 15/01/04.
I enclose a hard copy. I hope you can follow
the untidy way in which it was produced, but it was the only way I could at the time.
The significance of it now is that Judge Grenfell later directed that everything
from me, must be dealt with by him. How can the hearings
possibly be ‘fair’ when I have criticized him so strongly?
