Sufficient exercise is very important in the Border Collies' life style.

Border Collies should be walked at least once a day, but they will be quite happy with a game of fetch in the back yard for half an hour, twice daily.

In my view, it is not entirely correct that Border Collies need to be walking or working all day long as seems to be most people's belief.  My dogs seem to be very happy with just one walk daily.  What is shocking is that since both my dogs are from working stock, shouldn't they want/need to work?  Having said that, I would say that they do need a lot of my time.  They are not a type of dog who like their own company i.e. they cannot be left alone because they will become destructive.

It is true that if the canine doesn't have any sheep to herd, then it may need to take part in other activities; such as: fly-ball, jogging, or my personal favourite, agility.  Taking part in any of these activities involves training, but when dog and owner get the hang of it, it should be a very rewarding experience - for both.

Border Collies seem to be the best dogs for competing in all the canine activities.  Infact most professional dog agility trainers use Border Collies.  They start out by doing fun runs.  Border Collies always dominate the agility and fly-ball rings.
